Students who successfully complete the ALI’s Level One courses will be able to read and respond to sentence-level and short-paragraph written descriptions of familiar situations and be able to communicate, both orally and in writing, on concrete topics such as personal needs, immediate surroundings, and common social situations including shopping, school activities, and family.
Students who successfully complete the ALI’s Level Two courses will be able to comprehend clearly connected and organized texts, and students will be able to communicate, both orally and through unified multi-paragraph-level writing, using common rhetorical styles such as exposition, persuasion, and narration. Students at this level develop a beginning competency in understanding authentic texts written for a general audience and moderately adapted academic texts.
Students who successfully complete the ALI’s Level Three courses will be able to engage actively with extended authentic and/or minorly adapted texts written for general or academic audiences. Students how to integrate research and outside sources to support original work and develop additional rhetorical styles of multi-paragraph writing. Students can communicate orally in a selection of general and academic areas. Students who successfully complete Level Three are prepared to join UMKC’s undergraduate pathway program, the Paseo Program.
