The Paseo Program integrates English and academic study. Students in the program are required to take two specific courses in their first semester. These classes are ENGL 110 and ALI 160.
Program Features
- Admission to UMKC and ALI with one application
- No TOEFL, IELTS, or Duolingo English Test (DET) required
- In-person, full-time study designed to be completed in one 16-week semester (Fall or Spring)
- Opportunity to complete core academic requirements while taking English classes
- Earn university credit while in the program
Eligibility
- Conditional Admission to an undergraduate program at UMKC
- Proficiency test scores:
- TOEFL score 61-69
- IELTS 5.5 (minimum 5 in all bands)
- DET 95-99

No test scores? No problem!
If you do not have TOEFL, IELTS, or DET scores, you can take the ALI Placement Exam (CALIOPE).
Once you have been notified of Conditional Admission to your academic program, the ALI will contact you about taking the exam. The exam is unscheduled. You can take it any time you want. The exam can be taken only once.
Applicants who score between 45-54 on the CALIOPE, are admitted to the Paseo Pathway Program.
Admissions Process for New Students
- Submit your application.
- You will be contacted to confirm your intent to join the Paseo Program.
- Your application will be reviewed for Conditional Admission to your academic program.
- If you receive Conditional Admission and you submitted the required test scores, you will be admitted to the Paseo Pathway Program.
- If you receive Conditional Admission and you did not submit test scores, you will be contacted about taking the CALIOPE. If you score between 45-59, you will be admitted to the Paseo Pathway Program. If you score below 45, you will receive admission to the IEP only.
*Current IEP students who want to join the Paseo Pathway Program should visit the ALI Office to discuss this option.
