About ALI

The ALI Difference

The ALI at UMKC stands out from many other ESOL programs for several reasons. Here are just a few of those reasons:

  • Flexible Placement Exam: We understand that your time is valuable. That's why the ALI offers an online placement exam that takes approximately 1.5 hours to complete and does not require an appointment. Our convenient online option allows you to complete this essential step on your schedule, from anywhere.

  • Simple Payment Plans: Managing finances is an important part of your academic journey. UMKC offers a payment plan for students that you do not need to sign up for

  • Tailored Orientation Sessions: We believe a strong start is crucial. The ALI collaborates directly with the International Student Affairs Office to provide Orientation pull-out sessions specifically for ESOL students. These sessions are carefully designed to focus on the unique needs and questions of ESOL students. This dedicated approach ensures you feel prepared and supported from day one.

  • Comprehensive Student Support: We provide specialized advising for ESOL students and assist with registration for all ALI classes. We also work closely with the International Student Affairs Office to ensure our students can maintain their visa status and thrive during their time in Kansas City.

  • Multiple Program Options: The ALI has options for every student! Planning to complete an academic degree? Check out our programs for Degree Seeking Students. The UMKC-ALI Community

The ALI supports our students in and out of the classroom. We provide out of class programming for our students to help them connect with the ALI, UMKC, and Kansas City communities. Through these programs we aim to help our students build relationships and learn about UMKC and Kansas City.
