Program requirements

This program is comprised of at least 42 credit hours, including:

  • 30 credit hours of didactic coursework
  • 12 dissertation hours

Program benchmarks

  • Complete the required coursework
  • Complete at least 18 credits in no more than 24 consecutive months to satisfy the residency requirement
  • Pass comprehensive examinations within five years from the beginning of coursework
  • Prepare and successfully defend a dissertation proposal
  • Successfully complete your doctoral dissertation
  • Successfully defend your dissertation before a supervisory committee

Application Details

Application procedures and requirements

1) Prepare required documentation, including:

  • Official transcripts from all previously attended institutions
  • Statement of purpose that explains your academic and professional goals along with an intended research topic that is compatible with the department's faculty expertise
  • Three letters of recommendation from individuals who are academically or professionally qualified to assess your ability to pursue doctoral work
  • CV/resume
  • Writing sample

2) Complete the online application. Please be sure to pay applicable domestic or international program fees.

3) Make sure you meet discipline-specific requirements, which are listed in the Academic Catalog.

4) International students should contact the International Student Affairs Office for assistance. Inquiries regarding department specific policies or questions, email professor Zhongjin Li.

Application deadlines

  • Dec. 15 priority deadline for Fall Semester entry, including consideration for funding
  • Feb. 1 final deadline for Fall Semester entry 
  • Oct. 1 for Spring Semester entry
