The Ph.D. in Humanities with an emphasis in history is designed for students who have completed a Master of Arts in History and have a well-developed field of study. Our program combines advanced coursework in history with a secondary field of study in English, digital and public humanities, or general humanities. Students complete a research seminar, comprehensive exams in three fields of study and a final dissertation. In addition to teaching at the university level, many Ph.D. students go on to pursue related careers in library science, archival science and historic preservation. Our graduates have worked for institutions like William Jewel College, the Kansas City Public Library and The Linda Hall Library.
