The Department of History recognizes that internships are an important aspect of the history student’s education as they provide meaningful work experiences under the mentorship of an experienced and knowledgeable professional within the field. Undergraduate and graduate students within the department are placed with organizations and businesses throughout the Greater Kansas City Metropolitan area where they will learn skills in the historical profession and establish long-standing connections to members within the community.

Our faculty and students partner with a wide range of local museums and humanities agencies in the Greater Kansas City Metropolitan area to provide quality public programming, including continuing educational opportunities for K-12 teachers and public history professionals.
Digital history uses digital media technologies to further historical instruction, presentation, research, and interpretation. UMKC faculty and students are involved in a wide range of activities in digital history and digital humanities.
The Kemper Digital Humanities Laboratory (204 Cockefair Hall), funded by a generous donation from the Kemper Foundation, and located within the Department of History enables history students to explore the intersections of historical research and new media by producing innovative public history, digital history, and digital humanities projects. These classroom based projects are typically in collaboration with community partners.
The UMKC Center for Digital and Public Humanities, located within the Miller Nichols Library, supports students and faculty as they develop and practice critical research skills that integrate digital methods with scholarship in the humanities.
