M.A. in Economics

The M.A. in Economics at UMKC is designed as a preparation for further graduate training at the doctoral level and for professional positions in industry, business, government, teaching and research.

Master of Arts in Economics

The M.A. in Economics at UMKC prepares students for careers as economists in business, consulting, finance, government, or the nonprofit and NGO sectors. It also prepares students for further graduate study in economics leading to the Ph.D. degree. In 2024 the median salary for a professional economist was $115,440 and a graduate degree in economics is required for most senior level and leadership positions in the field.

The Economics M.A. requires students to complete ten courses (30 credit hours). The degree can be completed through either full or part-time study, and all required courses are offered in the evening or weekends to accommodate working students. Students are supported by a community of instructors who are leading scholars in their field and are encouraged to establish a personalized program of study suited to their career objectives.
