M.A. in Economics

Master of Arts in Economics

The M.A. in economics at UMKC prepares students for rewarding careers as economists in business, consulting, finance, government, or the nonprofit and NGO sectors. Our graduates work in all these fields. It also prepares students who wish to pursue further graduate study in economics for doctoral study. The Economics M.A. is a STEM-designated degree (CIP Code 45.0603) and develops advanced analytic skills — data analytics, modeling, policy evaluation — that are highly valued. In 2024, the median salary for a professional economist was $115,440, and a graduate degree in economics is required for most senior-level and leadership positions in the field.

The economics M.A. requires students to complete 10 courses (30 credit hours). The degree can be completed through either full- or part-time study, and all required courses are offered in the evening or weekends to accommodate working students. Students are supported by a community of instructors who are leading scholars in their field and are encouraged to establish a personalized program of study suited to their career objectives.
