Degree requirements for both thesis and non-thesis options are structured to give students a thorough background in research methodology, and courses are taught by faculty actively involved in research.
UMKC is fortunate to be adjacent to one of the most comprehensive and distinguished art museums in the country, The Nelson-Atkins Museum of Art. The department maintains a close relationship with the museum through joint appointments, curator-taught seminars, student internships and other cooperative programs.
The department’s own UMKC Gallery of Art and organizations in the Kansas City arts scene provide internships, networking, entrepreneurial mentoring and other professional development opportunities. Visiting artists and scholars, gallery exhibitions and enrichment programs supplement coursework and provide unique interactive learning opportunities.
Research in art history is supported by the Miller Nichols Library, the Spencer Art Reference Library at The Nelson-Atkins Museum of Art and the Linda Hall Library.
