Future Student Scholarships

A variety of scholarships are available to help new UMKC School of Humanities and Social Sciences students pay for college thanks to gifts from UMKC alumni, the Kansas City community and other generous donors.

School of Humanities and Social Sciences Department Scholarships

As a new student at the School of Humanities and Social Sciences, you're automatically eligible for scholarship awards as part of your application for admission. These scholarships are awarded on a first-come, first-served basis.

Several opportunities are also available with a separate scholarship application. The General Scholarship Application opens on October 1 each year.

Incoming Freshman Student Scholarships

Armacost Scholarship

  • Eligibility - First-time college students who have been admitted for a Fall semester start to the School of Humanities and Social Sciences. This is a needs-based scholarship, and FAFSA must be submitted.
  • Deadline - The priority application deadline is December 1.
  • How to Apply - Complete the General Scholarship Application. Your application will be automatically sent to review for the Armacost Scholarship if you are eligible.
  • One-time award - $5000

Barr Scholarship

  • Eligibility - First-time college students who have been admitted for a Fall semester start to the School of Humanities and Social Sciences.
  • Deadline - The priority application deadline is December 1.
  • How to Apply - Complete the General Scholarship Application. Your application will be automatically sent to review for the Barr Scholarship if you are eligible.
  • Academic year amount - $2000 (renewable up to $8000)

Future Roo Scholarship

  • Eligibility - Incoming freshman with a primary major in the School of Humanities and Social Sciences. Students must have a high school core GPA of 2.75 or above. 
  • Deadline - Awarded on a first-come, first-served basis beginning August 1.
  • Academic year amount - $1000

Albert Gerecht Scholarship

  • Eligibility - First-time college students only with high school GPA of 3.5 or higher who have been admitted to the School of Humanities and Social Sciences.
  • How to Apply - Complete the General Scholarship Application.
  • Deadline - December 1

The SHSS First-Generation Award

  • Eligibility - Incoming freshman with a primary major in the School of Humanities and Social Sciences who have indicated they are a first-generation student on their application.
  • Deadline - Awarded on a first-come, first-served basis beginning August 1.
  • Academic year amount - $250

Transfer Student Scholarships

Armacost Scholarship

  • Eligibility - Transfer students who have been admitted for a Fall semester start to the School of Humanities and Social Sciences. This is a needs-based scholarship, and FAFSA must be submitted.

Barr Scholarship

  • Eligibility - Transfer students who have been admitted for a Fall semester start to the School of Humanities and Social Sciences.

  • Academic year amount - $2000 (renewable up to $8000)

  • Eligibility - Incoming transfer students with a primary major in the School of Humanities and Social Sciences. Students must have a transfer GPA of 2.75 or above and 24 transferable credit hours.
  • Deadline - Awarded on a first-come, first-served basis beginning August 1.
  • Academic year amount - $1000

SHSS Dean's Transfer Award

  • Eligibility - Incoming transfer students with a primary major in the School of Humanities and Social Sciences. Students must have a transfer GPA between 3.0 and 3.5 and 24 transferable credit hours.
  • Deadline - Awarded on a first-come, first-served basis beginning August 1.
  • Academic year amount - $1,000

The SHSS First-Generation Award

  • Eligibility - Incoming transfer students with a primary major in the School of Humanities and Social Sciences who have indicated they are a first-generation student on their application.
