COMMSTudio

What is the COMMSTudio?

The COMMSTudio is a dynamic and multifaceted facility within the Department of Communication and Journalism. We are strategically integrated into Manheim Hall alongside faculty office spaces to foster a collaborative and interactive environment for enhancing students’ communication skills.

With four adaptable spaces, the COMMSTudio is designed to cater to diverse communication needs. While public speaking is a focal point, the center recognizes the broad spectrum of Communication Studies. Embracing the latest technology, these spaces are dedicated to speech communication, interpersonal communication, intercultural communication, persuasion, mediating, group interaction, and so much more!

At the heart of the COMMSTudio’s mission is a commitment to supporting the success of students. Public Speaking Coaches, who are trained peer educators, play a crucial role in guiding individuals on effective oral communication skills. From researching and writing speech content to mastering delivery techniques, organization, transitions, the use of visual aids, and managing communication anxiety, the coaches aim to elevate the communication abilities of their peers. The COMMSTudio prioritizes creating a non-judgmental environment and leverages audio and visual recording capabilities, allowing students to review their work and coaching sessions. These services are provided by Public Speaking Coaches through both scheduled appointments and drop-in sessions (subject to availability).

The COMMSTudio stands out not only as a place for skill development but also as a safe and creative space. It empowers individuals to become effective communicators and leaders across various contexts. With its comprehensive services, dedication to innovation, and commitment to inclusivity, the COMMSTudio is a cornerstone for advancing communication excellence.

Coaching Appointments

  • Punctuality, Support, and Professionalism: Coaches will be punctual for sessions, providing support in a professional manner. Expect a respectful and focused learning environment.
  • Answering Questions: Coaches will answer your questions to the best of their abilities, providing assistance and guidance to enhance your understanding of the material.
  • Collaborative Work: Coaches will work with you, collaborating to address challenges and reinforce concepts, but they will not complete assignments or tasks for you.
  • Knowledgeable about Resources: Coaches will be knowledgeable about available resources beyond the coaching session that can aid your learning process.
  • Setting Clear Expectations: Coaches will set clear expectations for each session, encouraging you to take an active role in your learning and become an independent learner.
  • Positive Attitude and Respect: Coaches will maintain a positive attitude and respect your diverse perspectives and learning styles, creating an inclusive and supportive environment.
  • Providing Comments, Not Corrections: Coaches will share their observations about what is working well and what you can do to improve in the future. These comments are suggestions designed to support independent learning on your part.
  • Grade Prediction and Instructor Clarification: Coaches will not attempt to predict your grades on assignments and cannot speak for your instructor. For clarification on assignments or grades, please consult your instructor directly.

  • Come Prepared: Bring all necessary materials to the coaching session, including relevant class notes, assignment guidelines, outline drafts, flash drive, etc.
  • Active Participation: Actively engage in the coaching session. Contribute to discussions, ask questions, and provide input.
  • Specify Goals: Clearly outline your objectives for the coaching session. Be specific about what you hope to achieve and what areas you need assistance with.
  • Independent Effort: Attempt your homework independently before seeking assistance. Coaches are here to guide and support, not to complete your work for you.
  • Punctuality: Only schedule meetings that you can attend and be punctual. If you cannot make it, reschedule or cancel your appointment. Notify your coach as soon as possible if you need to make changes.
  • Class Schedule Awareness: Avoid scheduling coaching appointments during your class time. Coaches cannot provide you an “excuse” to miss your classes.
