The ALI’s Teacher Education programs are short-term programs for Teachers of English that focus on improving students’ English language ability while examining teaching methodologies and technologies within a culturally-sensitive context. We offer in-person and online options.

In-Person Teacher Education Programs

All in-person programs come with cultural events and activities for students.

ALI English Teacher Camp

The ALI English Teacher Camp is a 4-week program to provide in-service and pre-service English teachers opportunities to develop their linguistic, pedagogical, and intercultural communication skills. We offer three types of programs, depending on English proficiency. Proficiency is determined by the results of our online placement exam (CALIOPE). Students will study using a J-1 visa.

We need a minimum of 10 participants to offer the camp. If there is a minority of students who test lower that their other peers, they may be given a modified curriculum.

  • "Key Concepts and Techniques" focuses on developing a clear understanding of EMI concepts, methodology, and class lesson/activity techniques.
  • "Theory to Practice" highlights a participant-observer approach, immersing participants in authentic classroom settings for first-hand exploration of EMI concepts.
  • "EMI Capstone Project" challenges participants to apply EMI program concepts and techniques to creating their own authentic EMI class lesson plans.
  • "EMI Immersion" matches each participant to two academic courses in her/his area of interest, allowing each participant to experience how her/his academic field is taught at UMKC in an English-only context.
