Students in the Paseo Program are required to take two specific courses in their first semester at UMKC.

ENGL 110: Introduction to Academic Prose (3 credit hours)

This course introduces students to college-level reading, writing, and rhetorical analysis. Students will analyze and create texts, focusing on the threshold concepts of writing, multiple rhetorical situations, and cultural matters related to writing. Students will also learn to analyze, revise, and edit their own work, and use academic documentation.

ENGL 110 is a part of UMKC Essentials/General Education courses. These courses are required for every undergraduate major. This class counts toward your total required credits for your major and toward graduation.

There are several sections of ENGL 110 offered each semester. Students in the Paseo Program should enroll in an in-person section.

Successful completion (a passing grade) in ENGL 110 means successful completion of the Paseo Program.

ALI 160: English Support for International Students (3 credit hours)

This course prepares students to deal effectively with the language and academic culture of undergraduate coursework at an American university. Discussion and exercises emphasize fluency and accuracy in both interpreting and producing oral and written academic discourse in Standard English. This course carries no credit toward graduation.

Students enrolled in ALI 160 receive a scholarship of $250 per credit hour. Enrolling in a 3 credit hour course results in a $750 scholarship.

Other course/enrollment requirements

Paseo Program students must be enrolled in a minimum of 12 credit hours each semester. The requriements above only add up to 6 credit hours. Students should work their academic advisors to find and enroll in additional courses to bring their course load up to 12 credit hours.
