Intensive English Program Details

The ALI's Intensive English Program (IEP) has small classes and dedicated instructors and staff. Classes are designed for success in English fluency and to prepare students for academic study. The IEP offers up to 15 weeks of intensive instruction during the Fall and Spring semesters. Full-time students receive 18 hours of instruction per week.

Community English

IEP Levels and Classes

A student's movement through the IEP is determined by their performance/grade in their courses. It typically takes students one semester to complete each level. 

A1 Level - beginner level

  • Master core communication skills in reading, writing, and speaking
  • Receive personalized support in labs and workshops to reinforce classroom content

A2 Level - intermediate level

  • Learn to write clear paragraphs, understand hidden meanings, and use new vocabulary
  • Improvide pronunciation and oral communication while practicing with diverse speakers and tones

Application Deadlines and Start Dates

The IEP has three start dates each semester: one regular and two late start dates. Only new students are allowed to use the late start dates. Students who come late join the classes that started at the beginning of the semester. 

Application deadlines for visiting students are set 10 business days before the start of classes. This is to ensure enough time for processing and onboarding.

Fall Semester 2026

First application deadline and start date:

  • Aug. 7, 2026 (deadline)
  • Aug. 24, 2026 (start)

Second application deadline and start date:

  • Sep. 4, 2026 (deadline)
  • Sep. 14, 2026 (start)

Third application deadline and start date:

  • Sep. 25, 2026 (deadline)
  • Oct. 5, 2026 (start)

Program Costs

The cost of tuition and fees depends on residency and length of study. 

Missouri and Kansas Residents

To be considered a resident, you must live in the state for at least one year. If you have not lived in Missouri or Kansas for one year, you are considered a non-resident for billing purposes.

Residents are charged the following items

  1. Base tuition
  2. Student Life Fee 

The costs for residents in fall 2026 are

  • Aug. 24 - Dec. = $5,912.10
  • Sep. 14 - Dec. = $4,629.00
  • Oct. 5 - Dec. = $2,933.10

Non-Missouri or Kansas Residents

International students without an F-1 or J-1 visa and students who have not lived in Missouri or Kansas for a full year are considered non-residents

Non-residents are charged the following items

  1. Base tuition
  2. Undergraduate non-resident tuition
  3. Student Life Fee

All non-residents at the ALI receive a partial scholarship for their IEP classes. The AY 26/27 scholarship rate is $566.67 per credit hour.

The after-scholarship costs for non-residents in fall 2026 are

  • Aug. 24 - Dec. = $7,366.90
  • Sep. 14 - Dec. = $5,720.10
  • Oct. 5 - Dec. = $3,66.50

Payment Options

Tuition and fee payments are due after enrollment. UMKC offers a monthly payment plan. There is no sign-up. You simply make a payment on or before the monthly due date each month. Payments are due the 20th of each month.

  • A $25 late fee will be added to the account each month a payment is not made and there is a balance on the account.
  • A 1% finance charge will be added to the account each month there is a balance on the account.
