Billing and Payment

Paying for your classes is important. This page provides information about how billing works at UMKC, what you can expect to be included in your bill and various payment options. If you are looking for information about how much classes cost, please visit our IEP Costs or Paseo Costs webpages. 

When is My Bill Created?

Your bill is created when you sign a housing contract or a registration form. 

What's Included in My UMKC Bill?

Your UMKC bill includes tuition, the Student Life Fee, the International Student Fee, the New Student Orientation Fee, and your health insurance. 

UMKC's billing system divides your tuition into two categories: resident education fees and non-resident education fees. The resident portion of your fees is listed as Base Tuition. The non-resident portion of your fees is listed as Non-Res Undergrad Educ fee. 

It will also include any charges you make to your UMKC bill, such as

  • Student health bills
  • Parking tickets
  • Parking permits
  • Meal plans
  • Housing fees
  • Late fees and finance charges
  • Bookstore charges/purchases

Your bill will show credits and payments as well.

UMKC's (Re)Payment Plans

UMKC offers a payment plan, which will let you pay your tuition through the semester, rather than all at once. You do not need to sign an agreement to pay monthly.

You are expected to pay at least 25% of your bill by the first day of classes. If you decide to make payments, you will be charged a 1% finance charge each month.

  • Make sure to make payments EVERY month on or before the 20th. If you do not make a payment, UMKC will charge a $25 late fee.
  • If you do not have a bill to pay on the first day of classes, continue checking your Pathway account until you have a bill, and then make a payment.

I still owe some of my fees for the current semester. Should I stop going to class until I can pay?

No. Owing UMKC for the current semester should not stop you from going to classes.

I still owe some of my fees from last semester. Can I register for classes?

No. You will not be able to register for the new semester's classes until you pay last semester's fees.

If you cannot pay the whole amount, visit the Cashiers Office to arrange a repayment agreement. You will pay a portion of what you owe when you sign the agreement, and then you can register for classes.

Tuition Refunds

If you overpay your UMKC bill, UMKC will refund the extra money. You could overpay by

  • Calculating your part of the bill after the scholarship incorrectly
  • Paying your entire bill before the scholarship is applied

UMKC will refund your money in one of two ways

  • If you have saved your bank account information in Pathway, the refund will be directly deposited into your account. This is the fastest way to receive a refund.
  • If you do not have a bank account in Pathway, the university will mail you the refund as a check. This refund will be mailed the following Tuesday, from Columbia, MO. Make sure you address is updated in Pathway so the check goes to the right place.

Payment Methods

There are many ways to pay your UMKC bill, including cash, check, credit card, wire transfer or TransferMate.

Students who are charged the Undergraduate-Non Resident tuition receive a scholarship from the Applied Langauge Institute.

How much will my scholarship be?

The AY 2026/2027 scholarship amount for UMKC F-1 and J-1 students is $566.66 per credit hour.

When do I get my scholarship?

The ALI will notify you when your scholarship information is sent to Financial Aid. The information must be processed by multiple offices, so it can take about a week to show up on your bill. 

How much of my bill should I pay?

To figure out how much you should pay, subtract the amount of your scholarship from your total bill. The remaining amount is how much you should pay. 

I dropped my classes; will my scholarship stay the same?

The scholarship amount is based on the number of credit hours you are enrolled in and charged for. If the amount you owe changes because you drop classes, then the amount of your scholarship will change accordingly.

Before you can register for a term, you must electronically agree to, or sign a hard copy of, the Statement of Financial Responsibility (SFR). This statement is an agreement to pay your bill and an explanation of UMKC billing policies and procedures. 

Students can agree to the SFR through Pathway, in the Registration and Records Office, or at the ALI Office.

You will not be able to register until you agree to the SFR.
