Conditional Admission

Do you plan to study an academic area after the English program? Depending on the academic program you are interested in, it may be possible to apply for the Intensive English Program as well as an academic programt at UMKC. This is called Conditional Admission.

Conditional Admission at UMKC pre-approves students for admission into degree programs before they meet UMKC’s English Language proficiency requirements. That way, once they achieve proficiency, they can easily enter their degree program.

Applicants who apply for Conditional Admission must apply for admission to the ALI and their chosen academic department at the same time. Review required application documents and english proficiency requirements for the department you're intrested in joining.

Applicants interested in Conditional Admission to a graduate program should identify themselves early in the application process, so the ALI can begin to build their personalized learning path. These applicants will be required to complete an online interview with the ALI prior to admission.

Immigration Documents

Per US government regulations, US universities cannot issue academic I-20s to students who have not proven that they meet all standards of admission, including proof of English proficiency. This means that when you apply for Conditional Admission, you will receive an I-20 that lists ESL as your program of study. Once you have completed your ESL classes, our International Student Affairs Office (ISAO) will help you transition to an I-20 that lists your degree program. After you are conditionally admitted, you will receive an admission letter that states your academic program and ESL. You can use this admission letter at your visa appointment to prove your Conditional Admission status.
