The ALI aims to provide students with an understanding of U.S. cultures and values, particularly within the educational environment, while acknowledging and valuing students' own cultures and languages. This means you will experience high-quality instruction by skilled instructors in a place that is sensitive to your needs.

How to Apply for Full-time Study

  1. Prepare your required admission documents. 
  2. Apply using our online application. 
  3. Follow the instructions emailed to you by International Admissions to pay the $75 application fee.
  4. Check your email daily for messages about your application and/or requesting more information.
  5. Admission takes about 1-2 weeks depending on the program you apply to and the time of year. 
  6. It can take up to 2 weeks after admission to receive your immigration documents. 

Please note: UMKC will not begin to review an application until after the $75 application fee is paid. And immigration documents cannot be created without financial documents.

Admission Requirements

English proficiency test scores

The ALI requires F-1 and J-1 applicants to submit English proficiency test scores with their application. There is no minimum score requirement. Test scores are used to determine course placement. Applicants cannot receive admission or visa documents until they submit test scores. 

The ALI will use the following tests for course placement. Results must be less than one year old. 

  • DET
  • IELTS
  • TOEFL

Conditional F-1 Students

  3. Academic transcripts and certificate of graduation/diploma.
  4. Personal statement outlining your goals for study at UMKC.
  5. Bank statement: translated into English, signed or stamped by the bank, states the name of the account holder and the type of account. The statement must show funds available as follows. 
    • One academic year = $50,623 (your amount will be lower if you qualify for a scholarship)
  6. Affidavit of Support (PDF)

Conditional Sponsored Students

  1. English proficiency test scores
  2. Passport
  3. Academic transcripts
  4. Personal statement outlining your goals for study at UMKC.
  5. Financial guarantee from your sponsor if you are sponsored by your government or employer.

Conditional Transfer students
